View Full Version : Where is our All-Star Game?

Long before they dug a hole to put Comerica Park in, the team implied that they would apply to host the All-Star Game in the new facility. After all, the game hadn't been played here since Reggie's shot off the light tower in 1971. (Before the '71 tilt, it was 1951 when the Tigers last played host.)

However, we couldn't have it in old Tiger Stadium. One, because the lovefest would look bad (when you are trying to get the community to support a new yard, you aren't going to have the world show up and embrace the old place) and two, because once the new park arrived, they would want the game ASAP.

So when exactly is it coming? As far as I can tell, Detroit still has not been awarded the A-S Game, yet. Does anyone know what the heck the Tigers' front office is doing about this? Last year, I heard they were under consideration. How long does "consideration" take? This is a charter AL franchise in a new ballpark that hasn't hosted the game in thirty-two years. If the city can host the Super Bowl, and it's already scheduled to, it can handle the A-S Game.

I know the White Sox are hosting again this year. Is this the second time in the new Comiskey? If so, I am really annoyed at the Tigers' management. Toss in the 1983 affair and Chicago's AL entry will have hosted the A-S Game as much in the last twenty years then the Tigers have in the history of the event. I hope that isn't the case.

Don't get me wrong, in picking a mid-summer vacation, I'd take Chicago, too. However, the Tigers are long over-due to host the game. A little positive baseball press wouldn't hurt the team one bit.

C'mon guys, we've even moved in the left field wall so the HR Derby winner won't have to hit just one to claim the crown. Bring the A-S Game here.

I forgot about this. Milwaukee had it last year, i don't know why the Tigers havn't been considered. It does kind of seem like the league has something against Detroit for some reason. I'll look for some more on this topic though.

Yeah, it seems most new stadiums get one within 6-8 years or so....::notme:

Last I heard, Comerica is a prime candidate for the 2005 All-Star game, when it rotates to the American League.

Let's keep our fingers crossed.

About time. From what I hear, Comerica is a fantastic ballpark.

hasn't been at Shea since 1964....I believe of the existing stadia that is the longest any has gone without hosting it.

I just found this All-Star Game tidbit over in the Giants forum. (Thanks, Liter22.) This certainly doesn't sound very promising for the 2005 game being played here. This is the type of story that makes Detroit fans go nuts.

St. Louis is unquestionably a great baseball town, but they have been given an All-Star Game for a stadium that isn't even built yet? Houston hosted in '86 didn't they? They get the '04 contest. There actually seems to be a growing line of towns lining up for yet another A-S Game before we get one here.

nice job, Bud, first you screw up the All-Star game, then you screw up the rotation. :banghead

Indeed, Houston had the '68 and '86 games, and now will get the '04 game, yet another 18-year gap between the contests.

The wheels on the '04 game were put into place shortly after Houston passed the bond issue to build a new park ... There was some mention of Houston getting the '02 game earlier in the proces, but it was changed to '04 when Houston landed the NFL's expansion club ... Houston nabbed the '04 game mostly to coincide with the fact Houston has the '04 Stupor Bowl.

No telling how much all of that cost the taxpayers ... Never have so many contributed so much so that so few could get so rich :hmm:

Oh, and Bob Brenly and Joe Torre screwed up the '02 All-Star Game, not Bud.

I hadn't thought of the Super Bowl/All-Star combo scenario. We host the Super Bowl, to the delight of ten of thousands who look forward to the snow and sub-zero temperatures in these parts in January, in 2006 (I think). Perhaps the city leaders are trying to convince Tiger management to wait until then to make a serious pitch. We should hear something this summer.
