Long before they dug a hole to put Comerica Park in, the team implied that they would apply to host the All-Star Game in the new facility. After all, the game hadn't been played here since Reggie's shot off the light tower in 1971. (Before the '71 tilt, it was 1951 when the Tigers last played host.)
However, we couldn't have it in old Tiger Stadium. One, because the lovefest would look bad (when you are trying to get the community to support a new yard, you aren't going to have the world show up and embrace the old place) and two, because once the new park arrived, they would want the game ASAP.
So when exactly is it coming? As far as I can tell, Detroit still has not been awarded the A-S Game, yet. Does anyone know what the heck the Tigers' front office is doing about this? Last year, I heard they were under consideration. How long does "consideration" take? This is a charter AL franchise in a new ballpark that hasn't hosted the game in thirty-two years. If the city can host the Super Bowl, and it's already scheduled to, it can handle the A-S Game.
I know the White Sox are hosting again this year. Is this the second time in the new Comiskey? If so, I am really annoyed at the Tigers' management. Toss in the 1983 affair and Chicago's AL entry will have hosted the A-S Game as much in the last twenty years then the Tigers have in the history of the event. I hope that isn't the case.
Don't get me wrong, in picking a mid-summer vacation, I'd take Chicago, too. However, the Tigers are long over-due to host the game. A little positive baseball press wouldn't hurt the team one bit.
C'mon guys, we've even moved in the left field wall so the HR Derby winner won't have to hit just one to claim the crown. Bring the A-S Game here.
