I posted this in there today:

I am hearing that I-Rod is basically saying that he will sign with the O's in a couple of days or so and that there are just some minor contract language issues to be resolved.....

From what I understand the O's are offering $7 million for one year. I think I-Rod is trying to get that figure closer to $10 million....

So, anyone suprised???

I'm a little surprised the O's are interested. I'm also surprised that no one else appears to be. To be honest, I'm not a huge I-Rod fan, but the guy can hit. Even if he only caught 100 games and was DH in the rest, he would seem like a valuable asset.

I know catchers' production can drop fast, but I wonder how much more interest there would be if I-Rod "settled" for something closer to $5 million a season?

If Irod was looking for $5 mil a season, I'm sure there would be much more interest in taking a chance on a great hitting catcher. But anything more than that and you start getting a little too risky with his recent health problems and bad knees...

Pudge is one of my favorites and, more than anything, the recent injuries cost him more than the effort this winter to collectively display restraint with free agents ... If he's healthy the last two years, he gets a 3-year, $35-$40 million dollar deal easy.

I'm not so sure. Seems the owners are coming around to this out-of-control salary situation. I've already read about grumblings of collusion. Even if Pudge was healthy, IMO, there's no way he'd garner 12-13 mill a year. The owners just aren't willing to pay it anymore.

...... why the hell not, I say!!! We don't bite in the O's Forum.

:D

By the way...... I just posted a little tidbit I found on CNNSI (Tom Verducci's column) over there..... there was this little paragraph tucked in at the end:

Lukewarm interest in Rodriguez is due to more than the slow market, according to one American League scout. "Pitchers hate throwing to him," the scout says. "The word's gotten around that he doesn't sit in on pitchers' meetings, he likes to call [fastballs] with runners on, and his skills are declining. A lot of balls get through him. You can put up with those things when a guy hits .310 with power, but now you don't know for sure if he'll do that."

Frankly, I've gone sort of cold on Pudge. I like the catcher we have..... he's raw, there's room for growth, but he's got great chemistry with the pitchers, a mighty strong arm, and a powerful bat when he connects. I'd rather that than a prima donna who's pissing off the pitchers.

(Granted, the above is only one scout's observation...... but it wouldn't break my heart if this didn't happen.)

You know, SI is the only place I've read this about Pudge ... I've got to think that if this was such common knowledge, it would be in more than one publication ... I can't remember who it was that noted the same thing here at Addicts earlier last fall, and I tried like heck to find the info ... Only found it at SI.

I even called my pop's cousin over at the Astros and he denied hearing/knowing/thinking this ... Of course, he knows what a big mouth I have and may have not wanted to be quoted himself ... But I've got to think that some of the pitchers they've had over the years who are also known to run their mouth (Rocker, Burkett) would've let this slip over time and it wouldn't just be a Verducci "scoop" ... Just my $0.02

You know, Willie, I'm never one to jump on rumors myself. And, as I said, I realize it's just one scout's observation. I guess time will tell. If the O's do this, it should make for an interesting season, right? :D

10-4 , Nanner ... Like I said over there in the No-Bite Zone, er, brilliantly moderated O's Forum, the only part that bothers me about Pudge signing in Bawlmer is I'm really looking forward to seeing Geronimo Gil get a little more experience under his belt ... And who knows?, this might be true about Rodriguez, may not be a rumor at all ... It might even make sense in that it's something that developed recently with the Rangers ... Pudge gets his feelings hurt that he's busted his wide behind for years and then basically gets left in the publicity dust of A-Rod, Chan Ho and others, so he slacks off a little.

Hmmmmm...... interesting point there about the hurt feelings aspect.

And I too am waiting to see The Chief get out there and do his stuff..... hence the reason I'm growing more and more reticent about I-Rod. I love watching Geronimo play, actually.

But I did read that Geronimo was playing practically every position in the Mexican leagues this winter. So maybe he'll sub at short.

:D

Well, well, well.

Pudge goes to the Marlins.

I guess I'll get to see The Chief play.
