No Timetable Set for Pirates' GM

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Pittsburgh Pirates owner Kevin McClatchy has no timetable for picking a new general manager and will conduct several rounds of interviews to choose one.

McClatchy said Monday he has interviewed two candidates, neither of whom he identified. One is known to be Houston Astros assistant general manager Tim Purpura, who met with McClatchy in Houston last week.

Frank Wren, an Atlanta Braves assistant general manager, is also expected to be interviewed. He lasted only a year as the Baltimore Orioles' general manager in 1999, partly because he angered ownership by ordering a team plane to leave without star Cal Ripken, who had phoned he would be late for the flight.

Wren was let go with two years left on his Orioles' contract, but was hired by Atlanta shortly after that. He once was an assistant to Florida general manager Dave Dombrowski.

More interviews are scheduled later in the week, though McClatchy plans to take as long as necessary to find a suitable fit for a team headed for a ninth consecutive losing season.

''I wouldn't put someone in there just to put someone in there,'' he said.

Cam Bonifay was fired June 11 after failing to produce a single winning team in his eight years on the job.

Last fall, manager Lloyd McClendon was hired following a single round of interviews with McClatchy and Bonifay. This time, McClatchy will interview at least five candidates and as many as 10, and will hold multiple interviews with some.

Only GM worse than Cam is Steve Phillips who gets the benefit of the doubt with his dubious moves because of the alleged salary cap that allegedly stopped him from going after A-Rod, Ramirez, Sheffield, etc. The salary cap doesn't explain why he goes out and gets guys like Mel Rojas, Donne Wall, Billy Taylor, Tom Martin, while letting guys like Terrence Long, Izzy, Bubba T., Bobby Jones, Scott Sauerbeck, etc. slip through his hands.

Proof of Phillips shortcomings is readily apparent from Mets' thin bench and a farm system is worse than the Bucs, even you can believe it! I just don't believe that Olerud and possibly even Hampton wouldn't have stayed in NY if Phillips agressively went after them. The guy puts a last minute, no better than Yanks' offer bid in on Mussina before he even talks to Hampton. And worse yet he now views Vandy as the answer to Mets' offensive problems!

I haven't seen Mets so screwed up since they dismantled the 1986-88 team. Remember the Samuel deal for Dykstra? Unbelievable!

i think thats a very responsible thing for mclatch to do. NO use rushing things just get someone who knows baseball. They arent in the hunt now anyway better to get someone good than being stuck with another clown for another two-three years.
