SAN FRANCISCO (Jan. 29) -- Five-time All-Star Andres Galarraga signed a minor league contract with the NL champion San Francisco Giants on Wednesday and was invited to spring training.

Galarraga, 41, hit .260 with nine home runs and 40 RBI for Montreal last year. He made 72 starts at first base.

Galarraga closed out the 2001 season with the Giants, hitting .288 with seven homers and 35 RBI in 49 games. He began that season with Texas.

"While J.T. Snow is our everyday first baseman, Andres is a man who's given a lot to the game of baseball and we wanted to give him an opportunity to make our club off the bench with this invitation,'' Giants general manager Brian Sabean said.

Galarraga is a lifetime .288 hitter with 386 homers and 1,381 RBI in 17 seasons. He won the NL batting title by hitting .370 for Colorado.

The two-time Gold Glover made his major league debut with the Expos in 1985. He also has played for St. Louis and Atlanta.
