Well.. only about 3 years AFTER I said they should pursue him.. but hey... better late than never.

Meanwhile, the Pirates' list of center-field possibilities dwindled by one when Jose Cruz Jr. signed a one-year deal with the San Francisco Giants. It is the one remaining position the Pirates had hoped to upgrade before spring training.

Free agent Kenny Lofton, who played in the World Series with the Giants last year, is still being pursued as a one-year solution. Cruz, 28, a switch-hitter, agreed to a $2.8 million, one-year contract with the Giants. He hit .245 with 18 homers and 70 RBIs for Toronto in 2002 but wasn't tendered an offer by the Blue Jays.

If Lofton cannot be signed, there is still an option of acquiring a corner outfielder -- a more readily available commodity-- and shifting Brian Giles to center. As of now, Giles is the left fielder, and such a move would only be considered if all else fails.

Giles is amenable to such a switch, as long as he not shuttled from one position to another and then back again. Littlefield said there would be no position hopping.

"I just want to play one position," Giles said yesterday from San Diego. "I actually feel more comfortable out there [in center]. I wouldn't mind it. That would be fine."

The Pirates could sure do a lot worse than Lofton.

And he might be a good mentor for Alvarez.

Would Lofton play in Pittsburgh?

I think the Pirates are better than they have been in a while but I don't think Lofton has ever not been on a contender

Oh yeah. And I hate lofton forever for putting the Cardinals 02 season to an end.

But then, I'd really like to see the Pirates with such a good leadoff guy. That would be cool.

Well Abben, it comes down to this. If Lofton wants to continue to play, he basically has to sign in Pittsburgh -- no other team is looking for a center fielder.

I think he would be a good signing.

I agree with Josh. It seems to me that his best opportunity to get a contract AND a good deal of playing time, would be to sign here. I guess it all comes down to wether or not he wants to play.

As for never having played on a contender before, he did play for the White Sox for part of last season, as well as the Astros and Indians in the early part of his career.

That being said, that is one reason why the Bucs SHOULD prsue him heavily. He knows what it is like to be on a winning team. That is an attitude which we could certainly use around here this season.

Or we could sign David Justice and hope that the Justice magic continues to work since he has been in the playoffs every year since 1991. :D

I would love to see us sign Lofton to a one year deal. It would give us a chance to leave Alvarez in the minors to at least begin the season, which I think would definitely be a positive for him.

Of course, Chad Hermansen played a couple seasons at AAA before coming to the majors and he didn't work out, so maybe that whole patience thing is overrated.

I don't think you can really compare Alvarez to Hermanson in that while it appears Hermanson wasn't rushed, in reality he was. He probably could have used an extra year at AA to really develop some discipline at the plate. He pretty much was screwed up from the beginning when they kept changing his position while rushing him through the minor league system.

I really believe that a full season at AAA will really help ALvarez develop into a pretty good every day player.

I think you're right about the patience thing. When you really look at it anymore, how many players that are making big impacts right off the bat are speding lots of time in the minors? Pujols and Mark Prior come to mind real quick for me...(I'm not putting Alvarez in the same category as those two, by the way:D )

What about bringing Derek Bell back? As stated in GiveHydzuAShot's quotes, he is the ultimate Pirate. I mean, he was on a contender a few times(the Asshoes and the Mets) and he can just live on his boat right outside of PNC, just like he did at Shea. I hated that bald, weak-hitting *****-ass pansy boy.

Bell's name should be banned from the language of any Pirates fans.
