Expos Agree to Terms With Buford, Downs

MONTREAL (Jan. 30) -- Damon Buford and the Montreal Expos agreed Thursday to a minor league contract, and the outfielder was invited to spring training as a non-roster player.

Buford, 32, spent last season at Triple-A Pawtucket and Charlotte, hitting a combined .231 with three homers and 12 RBI. He would get a $350,000, one-year contract if he's added to the Expos' major league roster.

The son of former major leaguer Don Buford, he has a .242 major league career average with 54 homers and 218 RBI in 10 seasons with Baltimore (1993 to 1995), the New York Mets (1995), Texas (1996 to 1997), Boston (1998) and the Chicago Cubs (2000 and 2001).

Also, Expos left-hander Scott Downs agreed to a one-year contract that would pay him $300,000 if he is in the major leagues and $177,750 if he is in the minors.

Downs was 2-1 with a 5.79 ERA in 17 games last year with Triple-A Ottawa. He had started the season on a rehabilitation assignment with Class A Brevard County following elbow ligament reconstructive surgery, which caused him to miss the 2001 season.

Montreal also hired Chris Bourjos as special assignment scout and promoted Mike Toomey as special assignment scout for the Northeast area. Bourjos spent the last 18 years as a scout with Toronto.
