Dodgers Invite Coomer to Spring Training

LOS ANGELES -- Infielder Ron Coomer reached agreement with the Los Angeles Dodgers on a minor league contract and was invited to spring training.

An AL All-Star with Minnesota Twins in 1999, Coomer spent last season with the New York Yankees, hitting .264 with three homers and 17 RBI in 148 at-bats over 55 games. He played first base, third base and was a designated hitter.

Coomer, 36, will make $650,000 if he makes the major league roster.

Coomer played for the Twins from 1995-2000 and the Chicago Cubs in 2001 before joining the Yankees last year.

He is a .275 lifetime hitter with 88 homers and 434 RBI in 842 big league games.

Coomer was in the Dodgers' minor league system when he was traded to Minnesota on July 31, 1995, with pitchers Greg Hansell and Jose Parra and outfielder Chris Latham for pitchers Kevin Tapani and Mark Guthrie.

Won't make much of an impact with the dodgers, but its good to have added depth to the bench.
