Tigers Sign Eight to One-Year Contracts
DETROIT -- Right-hander Nate Cornejo was among eight players who agreed to one-year contracts with the Detroit Tigers.
Cornejo began last season as Detroit's fifth starter, but he was sent to Triple-A Toledo on May 21 and wasn't called up until September. In Detroit, he was 1-5 with a 5.04 ERA and was 9-8 with a 4.42 ERA in Toledo.
He would get $303,000 if he is in the major leagues and $90,900 if he's in the minors.
Also agreeing to deals were right-handers Shane Loux and Matt Roney, left-handers Tim Kalita, Wilfredo Ledezma and Andy Van Hekken, infielder Travis Chapman and outfielder Andres Torres.
Van Hekken began season at Double-A Erie before being promoted to Toledo and Detroit. He was 9-7 in the minor leagues, and 1-3 with a 3.00 ERA with the Tigers.
Loux lost all three of his starts with the Tigers in September after going 11-10 with a 4.72 ERA at Triple-A Toledo. Torres played 19 games with the Tigers in April and September, batting .200 with three RBI. He batted .266 in Toledo with 42 RBI and 42 stolen bases.
Roney was 4-6 with a 3.48 ERA at Double-A Asheville and 3-6 with a 6.11 ERA at Double-A Carolina.
Kalita was 1-9 with a 4.93 ERA at Triple-A Toledo. Ledezma was 2-2 with a 3.80 ERA at Class A Reading, and gave up two runs in three innings in his only appearance with Boston's team in the Gulf Coast League. Chapman hit .301 with 15 homers and 76 RBI at Double-A Reading.
