Reds unveil new mascot

CINCINNATI -- Say hello to "Gapper," who's guaranteed to become Cincinnati's most popular "player to be named later" ever.
"Gapper" was the monicker selected among 6,400 entries in a contest to name the Reds' new mascot, who was introduced to the public during Redsfest in early December. The volume of entries delayed Gapper's official naming, which was originally scheduled for early January.

Reds fan Sam Frank won the contest to name Gapper. He was rewarded for his clever entry with two Reds season tickets for 2003, the inaugural year of Great American Ball Park.

This launches a busy week for Gapper, who'll embark upon a big road trip starting Thursday when he accompanies Reds players and officials on the club's three-day caravan through Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky.

Gapper will be featured in one of the Reds' biggest regular-season promotions on Aug. 1, when he'll have his own bobblehead night. The first 10,000 kids age 14 and under through the turnstiles for the 7:10 p.m. game against San Francisco will receive a Gapper bobblehead, courtesy of Pepsi.
