Barkett designated for assignment, why??? Geeze, it was only days ago Lloyd says he wasn't deserving of a demotion and just got caught in a numbers game. And now he's essentially released. Something is not clicking here.

And I'm glad to see Figgy get promoted. I always liked watching him play at Altoona, he really enjoys the game. Fun player to watch play ... nothing gets to him.

With J. Wilson's injury, Figueroa appears to be logical call-up. I can't figure out the Barkett move. If Vandy is traded, I thought Barkett would be lefty PH/sometime 1B later in the year. If Billy Taylor is on the 40 man roster, then this move is even more questionable.

Figueroa, 27, signed with the Pirates as a nondrafted free agent March 31, 1997. A switch-hitter, he had a .298 batting average for Nashville. He's a leadoff-type hitter who can play shortstop and second base, although he made most of his starts for the Sounds at shortstop. He was named to the Pacific Coast League All-Star team. "He's the type of player who will remind you of [former Pirate] Rafael Belliard," McClendon said. "But he probably hits better than ." Figueroa is known as a good defensive player. "He's good -- very good," Rob Mackowiak said. "We've played together at least a half a season for the last three or four years. He's an excellent fielder. He catches just about everything. He has good range. He's a little guy [5-9, 152], but he plays his heart out."
