Reliever Chris Nichting joined the Rockies as a free agent after the Cincinnati Reds decided to outright him to Class AAA Louisville, and he refused the assignment.
To make room on the 40-player roster for the right-handed Nichting, the Rockies put reliever Bobby Chouinard on the 60-day disabled list. Chouinard will undergo arthroscopic shoulder surgery Wednesday.
Nichting, 35, went 0-3 with one save and a 4.46 earned-run average in 35 games for the Reds and last pitched for them Aug. 24. In four games against the Rockies, Nichting allowed no earned runs in five innings.
Bell said the Rockies acquired Nichting with an eye to their bullpen next season, adding his stuff was good against the Rockies. He last pitched Sept. 10 with Louisville in the International League playoffs, one day before the terrorist attacks caused cancellation of the International League playoffs.
Eventually, I'll get caught up Rockie happenings, I hope...
