The Rockies claimed outfielder John Barnes off waivers from the Minnesota Twins Tuesday. Barnes, 25, was the Twins' minor league player of the year in 2000 after hitting .365 with 13 homers and 87 RBI for AAA Salt Lake in the Pacific Coast League. He hit .293 at Triple-A Edmonton with eight home runs and 42 RBI this season.

He was called up to the Twins for nine games in August, going 1-for-21 with one run scored. He made his major league debut for the Twins in 2000 and hit .351 in 11 games (13-for-37).

Barnes originally was a fourth-round pick of the Boston Red Sox in 1996. He went to the Twins in 1998 in the deal that sent Greg Swindell from Minnesota to Boston.

The Rockies picked up outfielder-first baseman Ross Gload off waivers from the Chicago Cubs last week. During this season, the Rockies have claimed left-hander Horacio Estrada, right-hander James Osting (later lost), shortstop Kevin Nicholson, right-hander Justin Speier and outfielder Cliff Brumbaugh from the waiver wire.
