Probable starting pitchers: Shawn Chacon (6-9, 5.26 earned-run average; first lifetime appearance against Montreal) for the Rockies vs. Tomo Ohka (1-4, 5.84; first lifetime appearance against Colorado) for the Expos.
Chacon will be seeking his first victory since July 24. In his past eight starts, he has gone 0-4 with a 4.94 ERA. He wasn't involved in the decision in his most recent start, Sept. 7 against San Francisco, allowing two runs in seven innings and leaving with a 2-1 lead in a game the Rockies won 3-2 in 12 innings. Chacon has pitched at least six innings in four of his past five starts. The Rockies have gone 11-13 when Chacon starts, and he has compiled a 2-4 record and 4.92 ERA in 12 road starts.
Montreal acquired Ohka from Boston on July 31 in the deal that sent reliever Ugueth Urbina to the Red Sox. Ohka has made seven starts for the Expos, and they have gone 2-5 in those games. Ohka's win came Aug. 30 at Atlanta, where he allowed two runs in 5 2/3 innings in the Expos' 4-2 victory. Montreal was shut out 6-0 and 5-0 in Ohka's past two starts. He lost both games, pitching five innings in each and allowing four runs to the Braves and two to the Phillies. Ohka has pitched more than five innings only once for the Expos, going 6 1/3 innings Aug. 3 at Houston in his first start for Montreal. Ohka went 2-5 with a 6.19 ERA in 12 starts for the Red Sox and twice pitched past the fifth.
Scouting Report
Series history: The Rockies lead 45-34. This will be their only trip this season to Olympic Stadium, where they have gone 20-19, including 14-6 the past four years. The teams have played one series this season, with the Expos winning two of three games at Coors Field on May 11-13.
Roster report: Pitcher Javier Vazquez, who was scheduled to start Saturday against the Rockies, was lost for the balance of the season Monday after his right eye socket was broken when Florida's Ryan Dempster hit him with a pitch. Vazquez, who was voted National League pitcher of the month in August, had compiled an 11-2 record and 2.23 ERA since June 15 . . . Outfielder Rob Ducey and third baseman Fernando Tatis are on the disabled list.
