B. Williams Reports to Cubs' Camp
MESA, Ariz. -- Billy Williams showed up on the day Chicago Cubs pitchers and catchers reported to spring training, saying he was confident a problem with an irregular heartbeat had been addressed.
The 64-year-old Hall of Famer was hospitalized briefly this month when a defibrillator that had been implanted in December needed to be adjusted.
Williams, a special assistant to Cubs president Andy MacPhail, is limited in his activities but is dealing with his problem through medication, as well.
Williams was a six-time NL All-Star. He was a lifetime .290 hitter in his 18-year major league career, including 16 of those with the Cubs.
He also spent 15 years as a Cubs coach before becoming made a special assistant on Nov. 1, 2001.
