Ponson, Orioles Avoid Arbitration
.c The Associated Press
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Feb. 14) -- Baltimore Orioles right-hander Sidney Ponson avoided arbitration Friday by agreeing to a one-year contract that guarantees him $4.25 million.
Ponson has asked for $4.75 million and Baltimore had offered $3.9 million, with a hearing scheduled for Wednesday in St. Petersburg.
Outfielder Melvin Mora is the only Baltimore player remaining in arbitration.
Ponson, 26, went 7-9 with a 4.09 ERA in 28 starts last year, and the native of Aruba is 41-53 in five seasons with Baltimore.
After practicing in the Orioles' first workout of the spring, Ponson learned that an agreement had been reached.
"I let my agent do his job,'' he said. "I just want to play baseball. That's all I'm worried about.''
