Beltran Loses Arbitration Case, Still Might Be Traded

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Feb. 14) -- The Kansas City Royals won their arbitration case with Carlos Beltran on Friday, and the center fielder will make $6 million this season instead of the $6.95 million he sought.

Beltran made $3.45 million last year when he hit .273 with 44 doubles, 29 home runs and 105 RBI, along with 35 stolen bases.

The switch-hitting outfielder has refused to sign a contract beyond the two years he is obligated to remain with the Royals, and could be traded before the season begins.

"We would talk about him in a deal that was right for the ballclub, to address short- and long-term needs,'' general manager Allard Baird said recently. "We're rebuilding this ballclub for the long term.''

"We're talking about a very talented player who will continue to improve,'' Baird said. "He would make a real impact on any club.''

Owners have won three of the five arbitration cases that have been decided. Five players are scheduled for hearings next week and the biggest case involves Atlanta pitcher Greg Maddux, who asked for $16 million and was offered $13.5 million.
