Blue Jays Claim $35 Million in Losses

TORONTO -- The Blue Jays claim they had a $35 million operating loss last year but expect to cut it in half in 2003.

Rogers Communications Inc., the team's parent company, said it plans to give the team as much as $23 million for expenses -- including $6 million to cover the part of Raul Mondesi's $13 million salary Toronto agreed to pay when it traded the outfielder to the New York Yankees last July.

Toronto plans to cut its payroll from $69 million in 2002 to between $50 million and $55 million this year.

"I honestly believe the Jays are getting their financial house in order,'' team president Paul Godfrey said. "We're living with a lower team payroll, which is more realistic and we are certainly working toward a day in the not too distant future where we hope this team can break even.''

The team was bought in late 2000 from the Belgian brewer Interbrew SA for $112 million.
