Syd Thrift, who spent the past three seasons as vice president of baseball operations for the Orioles, was hired yesterday as a major-league consultant with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
He spent the past eight seasons in the Orioles' organization, but was replaced this past offseason by the baseball operations team of Jim Beattie and Mike Flanagan.
Thrift was a scout for the Yankees and the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1950s, and he has also worked for the Kansas City Royals, Oakland Athletics and Chicago Cubs.
Thrift began his career in professional baseball in 1949 as a left-handed pitcher and first baseman in the New York Yankees system.
