Dodgers' Thompson to Miss Season
VERO BEACH, Fla. -- Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Derek Thompson will miss this season because of a torn ligament in his throwing elbow that requires reconstructive surgery.
Thompson felt a twinge on his last pitch during Monday's bullpen session, then woke up Tuesday and was unable to fully extend his arm without feeling pain. He prepared for the worst after an MRI Wednesday.
"I knew in the back of my mind this is what could end up happening,'' Thompson said Thursday. "If I heard the worst news, I wanted to be prepared for it.''
Thompson, 22, will spend the entire season on the disabled list, which means he will earn the major league minimum $300,000.
Thompson, who spent last year in the Cleveland Indians' farm system, has never pitched above Class A. He was selected by the Dodgers in December's winter-meeting draft.
