TUCSON, Ariz. (Feb. 23) -- The Arizona Diamondbacks signed All-Star infielder Junior Spivey to a two-year contract Sunday.

Spivey finished last season with a club-leading .301 batting average, 103 runs scored, 162 hits and 34 doubles.

"It's a little security, and getting a chance to play everyday, knowing that you are going to be with this ballclub. It's a good day. A good day for my family, a good day for the organization, as well as for myself,'' Spivey said.

Diamondbacks manager Bob Brenly said the new contract reflects Spivey's past performance and the upcoming seasons.

"He had a great year last year. He had an All-Star season for us last year and he deserves to be rewarded for that. But I think the upside in what we think he is going to do for us over the next few years, he deserves to be taken care of for that, too,'' Brenly said.

Spivey earned just $215,000 last season. The club did not disclose the financial terms of the new contract.

Spivey was the Diamondbacks' first All-Star player groomed exclusively in the club's farm system.
