HELP WANTED? :
To the surprise of everyone at Pirate City this afternoon, former 1996 All Star Lance Johnson showed up in street clothes to meet and greet with McClendon and other acquaintances.
The left-handed hitting Johnson is a 14-season veteran, spending time with St. Louis (1987), the Chicago White Sox (1988-1995), the New York Mets (1997-97), the Chicago Cubs (1997-99) and the New York Yankees (2000).
During his last big-league season, the outfielder/DH batted .300 (9-for-30) in 18 games with the Yankees. A .291-career hitter, Johnson hit a total of 34 homers and plated 486 runs in the major leagues.
“It’s not something you see too often, but there are some guys who go around looking for work,” Littlefield said. “We’ll probably ask our scouting department, but if they didn’t mention him before there’s probably a good reason why.”
Johnson spent last season with the Nashua Pride of in the independent Atlantic League, and he posted a .317 batting average with three home runs and 33 RBI.
