From 2/23's report from Bradenton:

HELP WANTED? :
To the surprise of everyone at Pirate City this afternoon, former 1996 All Star Lance Johnson showed up in street clothes to meet and greet with McClendon and other acquaintances.
The left-handed hitting Johnson is a 14-season veteran, spending time with St. Louis (1987), the Chicago White Sox (1988-1995), the New York Mets (1997-97), the Chicago Cubs (1997-99) and the New York Yankees (2000).
During his last big-league season, the outfielder/DH batted .300 (9-for-30) in 18 games with the Yankees. A .291-career hitter, Johnson hit a total of 34 homers and plated 486 runs in the major leagues.
“It’s not something you see too often, but there are some guys who go around looking for work,” Littlefield said. “We’ll probably ask our scouting department, but if they didn’t mention him before there’s probably a good reason why.”
Johnson spent last season with the Nashua Pride of in the independent Atlantic League, and he posted a .317 batting average with three home runs and 33 RBI.

It is just about as odd as that pitcher(what was his name?) that hadn't pitched in a couple of years coming to camp, and then, just up and leaving one day during workouts, never to return again.

Balvino Galvez was the pitcher, I believe. He pitched all of 20.2 innings in the majors.

Yeah, it isn't that uncommon, even for proven players to just show up. Most of them are over the hill and nobody wants to take the rick i.e. Jose Canseco.
AND
There's Ricky Henderson who is trying to get the A's to sign him to a minor league contract. So that will make it what? The 5 timers club?
