Howe Pleased With Mets' First Intrasquad Game

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Offense wasn't a problem in the New York Mets' first intrasquad game under Art Howe.

The new manager saw his players combine for four homers and 25 hits as the John Stearns squad beat the Bobby Floyd team 6-4. New York struggled at the plate for most of last season, finishing 11th among the 14 NL teams with 690 runs.

"I thought we swung the bats extremely well today,'' Howe said. "Far better than any team I've had the first time we've had intrasquad.''

After Pedro Astacio got three quick outs in the first inning, he gave up singles to Jay Bell and Cliff Floyd, and a three-run homer to Jeromy Burnitz. Burnitz also doubled off Steve Trachsel in the fourth inning.

Also hitting solo homers were Prentice Redman off Bobby Munoz, Tony Clark off Al Leiter and Tsuyoshi Shinjo against Aaron Heilman. Craig Brazell, a first baseman, was 3-for-4, and Mike Piazza and Timo Perez both went 2-for-3.

Not sure if that's good news for Burnitz or bad news for the pitchers? :D

Even if Burnitz hit all foul balls today it would be good news!!! At least he made contact with the ball that's more then he did all season!
