Edison Field to Get New Synthetic Warning Track

LOS ANGELES -- When San Francisco's J.T. Snow slipped on the warning track while chasing Tim Salmon's foul pop in Game 1 of the World Series last October, it prompted talk of replacing the slick surface at Edison Field.

The warning track is being replaced, all right, but the surface will still be synthetic.

"We're putting a new rubberized warning track in,'' Edison Field groundskeeper Barney Lopas said. "The existing track was worn, it was six years old. The decision to replace it was made long before the World Series because it was weathered and worn.''

Lopas, a groundskeeper since 1985 and the Angels' head groundskeeper for 6 1/2 years, said work will begin next week and the warning track will be fully installed by March 15.

"It will be better than what it was,'' Lopas said. "Basically, we're putting in the exact same rubberized track everyone else has. I've seen highlights before where guys have slipped on other tracks.''
