BRADENTON, Fla. -- Jim Thome's first at-bat as a Phillie went about as well as could be expected Thursday, as the team's new first baseman homered into a swirling wind in left field.
It came on an 0-1 fastball from the Pirates' Jeff D'Amico. The shot was a liner that crept over the wall in left at McKechnie Field.
The Phillies' biggest free agent signing since Pete Rose in 1979, Thome signed a six-year, $85 million contract in December. He swung over D'Amico's first offering, then went yard with the second.
Thome hit 334 home runs in 12 seasons with the Indians, a club record.
Randy Wolf, the Phillies No. 2 starter, pitched a scoreless first inning. He threw 11 pitches, seven strikes and four balls. Brandon Duckworth took over in the second inning.
