Game 1

Mike Hampton (14-12, 5.22 earned-run average; 5-2, 4.22 lifetime against Arizona) for the Rockies vs. Randy Johnson (20-6, 2.52; 6-4, 3.09 lifetime against Colorado) for the Diamondbacks.

Hampton will make his final start of the season and, with a win, would equal the second-best victory total of his career. In his past five starts, Hampton has gone 1-2 with a 5.76 ERA. The victory came Sept. 19 against Arizona at Coors Field, when he allowed only two runs despite walking seven in five innings. He didn't get a decision in a July 1 start at Arizona, when he gave up four runs in eight innings and wasted an eight-inning lead.

Johnson has compiled a 3-0 record and 2.86 ERA with 63 strikeouts in 44 innings through his past six starts. He has gone 3-1 against the Rockies this season. He goes into tonight's game 17 strikeouts short of the single-season record of 383 set by Nolan Ryan with the California Angels in 1973.

The Rockies lose game 1...go figure...

This was a baaaaad game! The wheels fell off after the Hampster hit RJ (and a fine hit it was!), and the Snakes were off to the races...RJ racks up career victory #200, remains 11 K's short of Ryan's record of 383 K's.

Mike Hampton suspended 5 games (http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/2001/1003/1258860.html) for retaliating against the Big Unit. (What a crock!)
