Tony Gwynn begins the final homestand of his career when the San Diego Padres welcome the Los Angeles Dodgers to town for the first contest of a three-game series at Qualcomm Stadium.
Gwynn, in his 20th major league campaign, has played sparingly this season but should see plenty of action in the next six days. In 67 at-bats, the 15- time All-Star is batting .323 with one homer and 16 RBI.
He may have to take a back seat to teammate Rickey Henderson at some point in the final six games. Although he went 0-for-4 on Sunday, Henderson is just three hits away from becoming the 25th player in major league history to reach the 3,000 mark. More importantly, baseball's all-time stolen base king and walk leader is a mere one run away from tying Ty Cobb's major league record of 2,245.
Cobb needed 3,034 games to amass the record. Tonight will be Henderson's 2,974th contest.
