Angels Renew Two Contracts, Agree to Deal With Eckstein

TEMPE, Ariz. -- David Eckstein, the Anaheim Angels' sparkplug shortstop, agreed to a one-year contract with the team.

Eckstein will make $425,000 this season, a raise of $145,000 from last year, when he helped the Angels win the World Series.

Pitcher John Lackey and infielder-catcher Shawn Wooten each had their contracts renewed.

Lackey, beginning his first full season in the big leagues, will earn $315,000 this year. Wooten, going into his third major league season, will make $337,500.

Eckstein has not yet played three years in the majors, so the Angels could have paid him the $300,000 minimum.

Lackey and Wooten, although they each said they understood the club's position, were not pleased with their contracts.

Lackey, 24, went 9-4 with a 3.66 ERA after being called up from Triple-A Salt Lake in late June. His ninth win was a 10-5 victory over Texas that gave Anaheim a wild-card spot in the playoffs.

Wooten, 30, missed the first half of last season with a thumb injury and a strained muscle in his side. He hit .292 with three homers and 19 RBI in 49 games.

thanks for posting that Gary...I've been out most of the day today. Keeping David Eckstein and John Lackey is a huge boost to the future of the club!
