Royals Re-Sign Six Players
SURPRISE, Ariz. -- The Kansas City Royals agreed to one-year contracts with rookie shortstop Angel Berroa, right-hander Runelvys Hernandez and four other players.
Kansas City also signed outfielder Dee Brown, right-hander D.J. Carrasco, and left-handers Darrell May and Chris George.
Berroa had knee surgery last April and hit only .215 last season at Triple-A Omaha, but he is expected to start the season at shortstop.
The Royals placed Neifi Perez, their starting shortstop last year, on waivers after the season and he was claimed by the San Francisco Giants.
Brown, who is out of minor league options, has a .229 batting average in 154 games over five seasons. Hernandez went 4-4 with a 4.36 ERA in 12 starts last year.
May went 4-10 with a 5.35 ERA last season with Kansas City after playing the four previous years in Japan. George was 0-4 with a 5.60 ERA in six big league starts in 2002, and 6-12 with a 5.87 ERA at Omaha.
