Royals' Febles, Quinn Leave Game

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Kansas City second baseman Carlos Febles and outfielder Mark Quinn left in the first inning of the Royals' 8-7 loss against Seattle, but both said their injuries weren't serious.

Febles was hit on the left hand by a pitch while leading off against Joel Pineiro. Quinn, who missed most of last season with a left hamstring injury, pulled up lame as he ran out a grounder that was the last out of the first.

Both are day-to-day.

Febles, the Royals starting second baseman the past four seasons, said the pitch pinched the ring and middle fingers of his left hand against the bat.

Quinn began last season on the disabled list with a fractured rib. He then played just 23 games after returning May 12, and didn't play again after going on the DL with the hamstring injury June 8.

Quinn said he felt the same sensation while playing winter ball in Puerto Rico, and played again just a couple of days later.

Just feel like I gotta' contribute something to this neglected site ... I thought things were slow at the Astros site, but sheesh! It's like the KC Royals are the street people of Addict Sports!

Quinn, Febles feeling better

PHOENIX, Ariz. - The Royals offered an encouraging report on Mark Quinn's status Tuesday after the right fielder had experienced left hamstring tightness while running out a ground ball in Monday's game against Seattle.

"He was much better today," Royals trainer Nick Swartz said.

The Royals think Quinn experienced scar tissue pulling apart from the original injury, which occurred last June when a left hamstring tear forced Quinn to miss the remainder of the season.

Quinn said he had a similar tightness episode while playing winter ball in Puerto Rico and was back on the field in four days.

"That's not uncommon," Swartz said. "When you have a tear like that, you're going to get some scar tissue building up. Those adhesions have to break free and it gives you a sensation of possible re-injury. But really, his exam yesterday did not look bad. When he came in today, he had some soreness there but we just don't see anything that would indicate a re-injury or re-tear.

"This is the second or third time he has gone through something like this. That's pretty normal when you have scarring. We were encouraged by how he felt and he was, too. If he comes in tomorrow and feels as good as he did today, I think we put him on the field and find out where he's at. A lot of times, it's a matter of getting through the tearing of adhesions and then you just keep moving on."

Febles better: Second baseman Carlos Febles was back on the practice field Tuesday. Febles bruised three fingers on his left hand Monday when he was hit by a Joel Pineiro pitch.

"He went through full activity today," Swartz said. "Swung, threw, took ground balls. He's got some swelling in the ring finger on that left hand."

The Royals will continue to evaluate Febles' progress on a daily basis before deciding when he'll get back in the lineup.

MRI pending: Outfielder David DeJesus, the Royals' reigning Minor League Player of the Year, had his right shoulder pop out and pop back in during Monday's game. He'll undergo an MRI.

"We're calling it a shoulder strain," Swartz said. "With this type of injury, we need to do an MRI for further evaluation.'

The skipper says: "Interesting. That's all I can say. Interesting." -- Tony Pena on Rule V prospect D.J. Carrasco, who has pitched three perfect innings in Spring Training.

How's the weather: It was pleasant but far from broiling for Tuesday's Oakland-Kansas City game. Most of the players not in the game were still favoring jackets. The sun broke through periodically.

Coming up: The Royals will be back in Surprise Wednesday to face the Colorado Rockies at 2:05 p.m CT. Veteran right-hander Albie Lopez will draw the start.
