In a best case scenario, it's time to pull the deal (everything) off the table. It's clear he doesn't want to be here. If he did, he would have signed with us this weekend or Monday at the latest. But the Pirates' first game is 27 days away, and it'll take him at least two weeks just to get ready --- he won't even be ready to play 9 innings several times a week for a good two or maybe even three weeks after he signs.
Even if he DOES truly WANT to be here (and that I doubt), I'm thinking he may not be the best option anymore. I'm beginning to think it might be time for Mackowiak and Wilson to split the RF duties with Sanders in left and Giles in center.
In a worst case scenario, DL has pulled the major league part of the deal off the table and Lofton will just make the minimum salary with incentives if he makes the team. Nobody else is remotely pursuing him, and nobody has pursued him all spring long. I don't think he should be given a guaranteed $1 million, which was the deal on Friday.
For what it's worth, DL said somewhere recently that there is going to be a time where he wonders if Lofton should be here. He mentioned there will be a time where the deal will be off the table.
