Ainsworth strong in split-squad loss
By Steve Gilbert / MLB.com

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Kurt Ainsworth rebounded from a tough first outing to toss three scoreless innings Wednesday afternoon in a split-squad game against the Diamondbacks at Tucson Electric Park.
The Giants wound up losing the game 4-2 in 10 innings, but Ainsworth was impressive, allowing two hits while striking out three and not walking a batter. The right-hander, who is battling for the No. 5 spot in the San Francisco rotation, allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits in two innings during his first start last Friday.

Ray Durham led off the game with a double to left and scored one out later on Rich Aurilia's single to center.

Arizona tied the game in the fourth on a solo home run by Felix Jose. The Diamondbacks then took the lead in the seventh when Quinton McCracken led off the inning with a double and Mike Bell followed with a single to right.

A pair of San Francisco doubles, by Edwards Guzman and Tony Torcato, tied the game in the ninth before Doug Devore's two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the D-Backs the win.

Jose Valverde (1-0) picked up the win in relief, while R.D. Spiehs (0-1) suffered the loss for the Giants.

Kurt Ainsworth confirming what we all suspected was the case. He is one hot prospect as far as the Giants are concerned. Don't be surprised to see him make a run at Ryan Jensen for that fifth spot in the rotation at a later stage of the season.

Jensen looked decidedly shaky in his start against the Brewers. Ainsworth has a great chance to make a run at this 5th spot.
