View Full Version : Scott Karl Released From Sounds
3-2 Changeup
06-30-2001, 12:58 PM
I was checking for an update on Scott Karl and found he was missing from the Sounds roster and stats. Check their transasctions and saw he was released on Monday. With Beimel struggling to go 5 innings and the Bucs liking LHP at PNC I don't understand why they would let a guy go who seemingly deserved to be called up. Anybody got a line on what happened?

His ERA must have been too low.

that is a shame! he seemed ok. and he never was given a chance even with the pitching so decimated.

To speculate is not a good thing in these cases. Sometimes players are let go because of contract clauses (ie a big raise if he is still around on July 1st), or because of off the field problems, or maybe they are just standing in the way of a prospect that needs to be brought in and looked at. I wish that it was that easy to do on the ML level, but when moving guys along on the minor league level it is not always apparent why they were moved... Andy Barkett is another example of this same thing...

Most of what we do on these boards is speculate and Monday morning quarterback. I was just looking for some info on why. I hardly view Karl as standing in the way of another's development given that we carried Billy Taylor in Nashville and continue to carry John Wehner. I just find it odd that not a peep was said in the media--not even a listing in the transactions given Karl's ML experience.

Taylor (broken leg) must be carried until he is healthy again, that is the rule. Wehner is a mystery, we must be keeping him around for some reason, maybe they are trying to get him his major league penson, who knows... what I meant on Karl is that there may be things going on that are kept quiet for a reason, substance abuse being just one example of why players are let go. Was he picked up by anyone? That may be a clue as to the fact that he isn't worth picking up or keeping. Similar thing happened last year to Dan Serafini... his numbers weren't awful, but he got released for some reason, and it was also done quietly... I don't know if he has been picked up either, for that matter.

Oh, OK. Gotcha. I guess I thought that stuff was covered under the bargaining unit's contract--you know, if a guy's got a problem he gets to go to EAP. Maybe there's something to that. I just figured someone had it in for him. I have not seen him picked up by anyone last I looked.
