PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) -- Right-hander Brian Lawrence and the San Diego Padres agreed Friday to a four-year contract with a team option for 2007.

Lawrence, 26, was the Padres' winningest pitcher last year and is to start this season's opener. He was 12-12 with two shutouts, leading the team in innings (210) and strikeouts (149).

This team is toast this year without Hoffman and probably Nevin now ... They'll need Lawrence to start earning some of that money right away if they are going to keep out of the deep, deep NL West cellar.
