MESA, Ariz. -- Mike Mahoney hit a sacrifice fly with one out in the ninth inning Saturday and drove in the game-tying run to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 3-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox.
With the game tied at 2-2 in the Cubs ninth, Phil Hyatt walked to lead off against Mike Porzio. Midre Cummings hit a comebacker to the left-hander who threw the ball into center field for an error. Both runners advanced on pinch-hitter Jackson Melian's sacrifice. Charles Gipson was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Mahoney then lofted the ball to center for a sacrifice fly and the game-winner.
Joe Crede and D'Angelo Jimenez each hit solo home runs for the White Sox. Crede connected with two out in the second while Jimenez did so with two out in the third.
They were the only hits off Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano over four innings. He also walked one and struck out three.
Jon Garland, who was the Cubs' No. 1 selection in the June 1997 draft and then traded to the White Sox, threw four shutout innings in his second start. He gave up three hits and one walk, striking out two.
Cubs right fielder Sammy Sosa, playing only his second spring game after being sidelined by a viral infection, went 1-for-2, including a single in his first at-bat in the first.
Bobby Hill hit a sacrifice fly in the Cubs fifth to make it 2-1. The Cubs tied it at 2-2 in the seventh when Cummings doubled and eventually scored on Mahoney's ground out.
This was the first of two Cactus League meetings between the intracity rivals. The Cubs and White Sox will play for real June 20-22 at Wrigley Field and June 27-29 at U.S. Cellular Field.
