MESA, Ariz. -- Kerry Wood, the Cubs' likely Opening Day starter, struck out six over five scoreless innings Monday night and Mark Bellhorn hit a two-run homer as Chicago played to a 2-2 tie with the Oakland Athletics.
The Cubs had a runner at first with one out in the ninth, but Lenny Harris lined out to first baseman David McCarty, who stepped on the bag for a double play.

Wood gave up three hits and three walks in his longest spring outing.

Monday's lineup of Bobby Hill, Alex Gonzalez, Sammy Sosa, Moises Alou, Hee Seop Choi, Corey Patterson, Bellhorn, Damian Miller and Wood will most likely be starting on Opening Day in three weeks. Wood hasn't officially been named the starter.

"Right now I'd lean towards 'Woody,'" Cubs manager Dusty Baker said Monday.

Bellhorn, who played second base last season but is projected as the starting third baseman, connected off Oakland starter Ted Lilly with two out in the second, driving in Moises Alou, who had singled. It was Bellhorn's first spring homer.

Jon Leicester walked Oakland's German Esteban with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh to force in a run. Rod Beck, a non-roster invitee who missed all of last season following Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, then walked Mitch Meluskey to force in another run and tie the game at 2.

The biggest cheer of the game came when the Mesa Fire Department finally turned off the fire alarm that was set off in the HoHoKam Park press box. No one was hurt and there was no serious damage, just a strange smell and prolonged noise from the alarm.

Kerry should finish in the top 5 Cy Young voting this year, if he stays healthy and gets run support.
