Royals Claim R. Johnson From A's
SURPRISE, Ariz. -- The Kansas City Royals claimed outfielder Rontrez Johnson off waivers from the Oakland Athletics.
Johnson hit .300 with a .397 on-base percentage, nine home runs, 27 doubles, 71 runs and 31 stolen bases last year with Triple-A Omaha. He signed with Texas as a minor-league free agent after the season.
The A's selected Johnson in the Rule 5 draft on Dec. 16, but he hit only .148 with one home run and five RBI in 12 exhibition games.
Johnson, who began his career in the Boston Red Sox organization, hit .182 in 20 spring training games last March with Kansas City.
