Beltran Doubtful for Royals' Season Opener

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Out since March 10 with a strained muscle on his right side, Carlos Beltran probably will begin the season on the disabled list instead of in the Kansas City Royals' outfield.

"Beltran is not close,'' Royals manager Tony Pena said "I don't think he'll be ready for Opening Day.''

The Royals begin the season March 31 at home against the Chicago White Sox.

Before the injury, Beltran was hitting .310 with one home run and 10 RBI in 10 exhibition games. He led the Royals last season with 29 homers, 105 RBI, 44 doubles, 114 runs and 35 stolen bases while playing in all 162 games.

Pena said if Beltran starts the season on the disabled list, Michael Tucker probably would play center field.
