Who here watches wrestling?

If anyone would like to give their favourite fed (all time), favourite performer, favourite time period etc, feel free to do so...

Ok, I've been watching since I was reasonably young, though I have recently got fed up with it and am currently not watching it (I recently saw a wrestler called Cheex, who was, appropriately managed by the "Brown eyed girl", and I though that as an industry it has gone too far!!!!!!).

The late 80's-early 90's is my area of expertise and main interest. (WWF, JCP, early ECW)

I think the magic of the sport has well and truly worn off, but I will still contribute my thoughts/opinions if wanted/needed...

i've been watching since mid 80's. i like the period of the late 80's to early 90's when luger, sting, steamboat, the 4 horsemen were all big.

in the wwf i was a huge fan of Brutus Beefcake, Hogan (of course), the rockers, things like that. that was when wrestling was at its best. :)

The original horsemen were cool, the epitome of a heel stable...they will never be duplicated!

...The Rockers (hahaha), you've gotta get a kick out of seeing Shawn Michaels, complete with flourescent tassles and bleached blonde hair, who would've thought at that point he'd be a really good world champ later down the track (and Marty would be nothing)???

...Steamboat ::sigh:: so poorly used during his WWF stint, its a pity the only established performer who could go with him was Savage (Bret Hart would've been good, but he hadn't yet shined as a singles performer)...his feud with Flair was legendary though!

rockin500
03-25-2003, 09:37 AM
i loved the savage steamboat thing. but you're right, steamboat/flair matches were legendary; only rivaled by flair/sting.

well, marty turned into nothing due to drugs. it was supposed to be marty getting the big push instead of shawn, but marty got mixed up with drugs. :(

Flair had a good thing going with Terry Funk as well in '89, Flair could pretty much put anyone over at that time...

Sting probably would have been one of the few talants that would have been properly used if Vinny Mac was able to sign him in the early '90's.

Yeah, then later they teamed him with Al [Leif Cassidy] Snow. Repackaged = The NEW Rockers...Oh boy that was pitiful!

I hope I'm not speaking too soon, but I hope the Ultimate Warrior doesn't come up very often, I've tried to forget him...

I love wrestling! When I was just a kid my dad and I used to watch it all the time. My faves are (now these are from all different time periods) Andre the Giant, Shawn Micheals, The Big Show, Too Cool, and The Rock.

LoL I remember watching wrestling with my dad when I was about 7 or 8. Jake the Snake used to scare the hell outta me! :D

I know what you mean, when he cut a promo, he was so intense but never raised his voice and always remained dead calm (very eerie indeed!).

Even Andre was scared of that snake (or so the angle went)...that was all moot though after Earthquake squashed poor Damian...

And now back to reality! :D

HUGE, HUGE fan here!!!
Been watching wreslting since the early 80's....

I've liked all the promotions during the various stages of their existance.....

Back in the 80's I loved the NWA....Favorite wrestlers during that time included Sting, Flair and the 4-Horsemen...Learned to love Flair more in the 90's.....

Favorite Horsemen included Flair, Windam, Arn and Tully with JJ as their manager.......Also like Lugar as a HM as well......

I also watched WWF during that time and like Ray, Brutus was my favorite....Like Hogan, but was sick of him after a while...I was also a big Ultimate Warrior fan back when he used to team with Sting in the old UWF days and when he 1st came to the WWF....Match vs Hogan at WM is still one of the best IMO....

Fast forward to the 90's.......
WCW pretty much backed out of the NWA as the NWA as we pretty much knew it in the 70's and 80's died off....
I really enjoyed the early 90's of WCW....Sting, Lugar, Flair, Muta, Funk, Steiners, etc.....

The Flair/Funk matches were fantastic!!!
That is when Funk teamed with Muta along with Gary Hart.....Sting at that time had a huge fued with Muta over the TV title and actually came to Flairs aid...I believe it was during a Great American Bash...Flair/Sting and Muta/Funk battled all over the fricken arena for about 15-20 minutes after the match between Flair and Funk ended....Everyone was a bloody mess.....
Oh man I have some memories......
I probably still have 150-180 hours of wrestling on video.....
Anyways, I loved when Flair went to the WWF along with the NWA belt and brought on Heenan as his consultant....
The match with Flair and Savage at WM is legendary......That started getting my interest a little more in WWF although I always watched it I did prefer WCW....
I actually turned to watching more WWF as I became a HUGE Shawn Michaels fan, post-Rockers......To this day, he still my favorite.....
I am very hopeful that Sting may make his way to WWE as he is apparently in negotiations with them...
Oh by the way, to get off the subject for a minute, I heard that the May edition of the WWE magazine has none other than Goldberg on the cover with "Who's Next" on it...Could this mean a Goldberg return???

Anyways back to my story;)
I then started getting more interest in WCW during one of the most famous story lines-NWO....What a fantastic story line that was.....Hogan turning bad which actually rejuvinated my liking him.....I remember on a Nitro when Madussa came on Nitro after being on Raw the week before and threw the womans WWF womans title in the trash....That was cool!!!

Other federations that I enjoyed watching was ECW (probably my overall favorite during the 90's), Smoky Mountain Wrestling and New Japan (IWGP)
I have been to many WCW PPV's including the Bash at the Beach in Orlando where Hogan won his 1st WCW title over Flair--$100 1st row seats.....
We had signs saying-'Be fair to Flair" lol Loved Falir back then....
Also the Bash at the Beach-1 where they had the wrestling match of the year with the Steiners vs Lugar/Sting...Unbelievable match....Nikkita Koloff came out at the end which led to a great fued with Sting......
I saw ever Slamboree which was a 2 day event in Georgia and got to eat dinner with Jim Brunzell and got auto's from all the greats--Stu Hart, Lou Thez, etc......
Saw the return of Flair at a PPV in North Carolina....He came back from WWF...At that same PPV I saw Windam beat Muta for the NWA World title......
Have seen the Horsemen win tag titles at a Clash of Champions and have seen many of the old US tag titles change hands.....
Now I still go to Raw's when they come to Orlando.....
Got to see a couple of ECW events here in town and by far they were the best live events I have ever seen.....Only a few hundred people but they were great......Saw Taz and Sandman completely destroy the arena.....
I still have a bunch of good old stuff on tape like Smoky Mountain Wrestling--Rock and Roll Express and the Midnight Express continued their fued there and Arn Anderson even showed up at one time.....
Have some great Japan stuff on tape.....Hogan/CStan Hansen vs the Road Warriors--LOD destroyed Hogan....Some great matches with Jushin Thunder Liger, Muta vs Chono, exploding barbed wire matches...Many more...

Again ECW was probably my favorite...Have some great matches from them...Was a big Franchise- Shane Douglas fan...Also liked Taz, Dudley's, BWO-Blue Meanie and Richards, Rave, Rob Van Dam, Sabu, Cactus Jack, etc....
One of the best matches ever that I still have on tape was a barbed wire match between Terry Funk and Sabu...Sabu beat Funk that night to capture the ECW title....
I also have the night that Shane Douglas won a tourney for the NWA title and threw down the belt after a great speech and declared ECW(then Eastern Championship Wrrestling) its own Fed and renamed it Extreme Championship Wresling......
Great fueds, Guererro vs Malenko was legendary!!
Man I miss the old days..

Sorry guys to ramble on....Brings up very good memories....:)

I really never got to see much SMW (It was a shame), but what I did see I really enjoyed--very old school in its look and feel, I guess thats what you get when its run by Corny--...OK so I only saw Kevin Sullivan massacre Yukihiro Kanemura, (which required 50 stitches in his arm) and Sullivan also whooping Brian (Evil Undertaker my butt) Lee...

ECW was something that I had been reading about for years and finally got to see in about 96 or 97, and I must say, I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread, it was something we could take seriously, Tod Gordon and later Paul E never tried to insult our intelligence with childish characters, because they realised that it would be aimed at people who wished JCP was never sold to Turner...
Plus ECW got me into IWA Japan, Big Japan, FMW etc...

I agree the nWo angle, was the most interesting angle I have ever seen, you had suspicion of who would turn and you just knew something would happen...as for Hogan, I think it got everyones interest in him again, and it bought guys like Buf, Scott Norton etc more air time (OK so those two aren't the best example).

The Funk/Sabu barbed wire match was legendary, with Sabu tearing open his arm, and pretty much losing his pants...I also really enjoyed the secong RVD/Sabu match (the one with the broken ropes)...

Good to see we have similar taste in feds (well except I never really liked early 90's WCW, it was just a little too far fetched...I mean Johnny B. Badd (then again 80's WWF wasn't that much more mature I guess, anyone remember Hulks vitamins that were sold???)

I hope this all makes sense, I have just woke up...:ugh:

Tripitaka
03-25-2003, 09:01 PM
Guererro vs Malenko showed the wrestling world that it wasn't just a blood and guts fed...

They had a nice LITTLE feud in '97 in WCW also, pity that they didn't continue it longer for a larger audience (oh well, we'll always have the ECW memories).

Tripitaka

Oh by the way, to get off the subject for a minute, I heard that the May edition of the WWE magazine has none other than Goldberg on the cover with "Who's Next" on it...Could this mean a Goldberg return???

The Funk/Sabu barbed wire match was legendary, with Sabu tearing open his arm, and pretty much losing his pants...I also really enjoyed the secong RVD/Sabu match (the one with the broken ropes)...

Yep and during the match you had him trying to wrap tape over it to try and stop the bleeding......

The RVD and Sabu matches were all great...

Did you ever see the 1st Clash of Champions??
The main event was a 45 minute time limit draw between Sting and Flair....
Sting had Flair in the Scorpion Deathlock for the last 45 seconds of the match and Flair refused to give up and held on to his title.....
Great stuff...
How about the first few War Games??? Damn, those were great!!!

Man we could go on and on....

Ok, name your top 5 tag teams of alltime in order of how you liked them....

Also name your favorite wrestlers of alltime in the same order....

I'll start....

Tag Teams:
Steiners
Rock and Roll Express
Road Warriors
Arn and Tully
Demolition

Individual:
Sting
Shawn Michaels
Flair
Brutus Beefcake

Tag Team Top 5
1. The Rockers (Shawn Michaels, Marty Jannety)
2. Hogan and Savage
3. The Bushwackers
4. Hacksaw Jim Duggan and Nikolai Volkov
5. Sting and the Ultimate Warrior
Favorite Top 5
1. Jimmy "The Superfly" Snuka
2. The Ultimate Warrior
3. Hulk Hogan
4. Randy Savage
5. Andre the Giant

Now I must admit, I've been out of the loop for a while. I haven't watched in years. But I used to love it. The tag teams were a difficult decision. There were so many I liked. Those crazy bastards with the suped-up football pads (spiked), I think it was Demolition or something, they were cool. The Superfly, man he was great. The crowd flip out. He could work those ropes, like Macho Man.

Racosun, I think you're thinking of the Legion of Doom/Road Warriors...

Tripitaka
03-26-2003, 08:59 AM
Tag Teams
1. The Bulldogs (the most revolutionary team EVER, they could do it all)
2. Tully and Arn (Who needs gimmicks! Even Vince realised that these guys don't need one!)
3. Demolition (another team before their time)
4. Gangstas (Kings of heel heat! Being an SMW fan, I'm sure you'll remeber Guru...)
5. LOD/Road Warriors (Err, What a rush!!!!)

Singles
1. Bret Hart (I don't know why, I just always liked Bret)
2. Ric Flair (He could and would put anyone over, pity he just kept on wrestling)
3. Sabu
4. The Sandman
5. Randy Savage (It could be that I was never a big Hogan fan)

Dang, this is hard!!!! I need more picks...so many good ones!!!

Did you ever see the 1st Clash of Champions??

A very long time ago, that was one of the cards that got me into JCP...

How about the first few War Games??? Damn, those were great!!!

A very good idea that I hope doesn't get replicated by anyone else (thats a WCW/JCP idea), the only problem with wargames was you had a whole card with two rings, which was a little destracting. (World War III was even worse, with 3 rings)

Man we could go on and on....

And hopefully we do. :D

Have you ever seen XPW? What did you think?

In my opinion, the worst fed I have ever seen...I only bought their death match tourney because Kerry King from Slayer was the guest ring announcer...its a complete ECW rip off with cheesy sports entertainment storylines.

Now that I found people to talk wrestling with, I now regret giving my PWI Almanac to my brother and selling all my magazines...:banghead

Isnt that based in Cali or somewhere out there???

ECW was reveloutionary....Paul E was a genius...Oh, we were talking earlier when WCW had the NWO storyline, how abbout when ECW invaded Raw??
That was cool as hell!!!
Mr. Monday Night-RVD!!!!
I think it was RVD or maybe Sabu?? that jumped off of the Raw sign they had at the werestlers entrance....
Good $hit!!!

War Games--hmmmm

Road Warriors
Sabu
Haybussa(not sure if I spelled that right)
Cactus Jack

There's my 5 man team......

Your correct, Clash 1 was better than WM..Although the elimination tourney was kinda cool with Savage winning the tourney final with the help of Hogan to become the new WWF champ.....

Tripitaka
03-26-2003, 10:05 AM
It would have been better if Hogan didn't interfere in the main event...

XPW is run by Rob Black, and they tried to invade the ECW locker room during an ECW PPV and gt their a$$es handed to them by the ECW guys...

I only read about the ECW invasion of Raw, we didn't have federation TV at that time...unfortunately!
Didn't RVD get alot of heat for refusing to job to the Road Dogg by count-out?

Baseball Guru
03-26-2003, 10:09 AM
I believe RVD did get a lot of heat for that....

That was back when Raw was on the USA network....

It was a great angle......Lawler was very heavy into the fued......

Got handcuffed and got his a$$ whopped when he showed up on ECW TV.....

I remember when XPW invaded ECW.....Kinda watched it on and off then.....Once soem of the guys like Taz went to WWE, I started losing interest...ECW was not as good towards the end.....

No Raven, Saturn, Al Snow, etc...They all defected to WWE or WCW:(

I wish Vince would start up a ECW type of fed for hardcore fans.....

Tripitaka
03-26-2003, 10:10 AM
Here are a couple of Wargames teams, not my ultimate team but anyway...

1. Ric Flair, Abby, Carlos Colon, Original Shiek, Mr Pogo (they would NOT get along but think of the blood...OMG!)

2. Zeus, Undertaker, Ultimate Warrior, Hawk, Haku (they wouldn't get along either, but notice none of those guys sell moves very well (or in Zeus case sell moves AT ALL!)

Hayabusa and Sabu on the same team...:yikes: Pity Hayabusa broke his neck though...:(

Noooooo! Vinces vision of hardcore is very soft and waaay to gimmicky for my liking...Crash (or Bob) Holly= Hardcore, I don't think so! I suggest buying lots of ECW tapes and get your fill that way, ECW will never be replicated (and rightly so, it had hardcore, lucha/aerial, technical and through it all kept old school psychology alive and well).

Ever seen CZW? Its more extreme than ECW but lacks the psychology, its just violence for the sake of violence (check out the weapons match between Jun Kasai and Nick Mondo vs Justice Pain and Johnny Kashmere, talk about brutal, OMG!)

Sabu vs. Chris Benoit (Benoit breaks Sabu's neck)

The Birth of the Crippler gimmick!
Sabu still werestled after that too, Crazy, he sould have let his injuries heal...

Its not a very good match but have you seen Invader 3 vs Manny Fernandez from Peurto Rico?
Its very short, with Manny giving a top rope knee drop that results in the Invader puking up a ton of blood (actually it was pigs blood and vodka), VERY SCARY!

3. Xanta Klaus
4. Avatar
5. MVP (or Abe "The Knuckle Ball" Schwarz)
6. The Common Man
7. Portugese Man of War
8. Flex Cavana
9. The Sheepherders
10. Crash the Terminator (hey, I have to put in a couple of hard ones in here!)

I know that they have kids from the first 2 Tough enough competitions, but as for series 3, I am not sure...

Some of them seem to be doing pretty well for themselves and getting some decent pushes (yet Sean O'Haire gets looked over, despite the fact he was one of WCW's most promising young talents in it twilight year).

Weren't the Sheepherders also the Bushwackers???

Red Roster was Terry Taylor

Not sure I even remember some of the others....

Tripitaka
03-27-2003, 07:26 PM
I don't blame you for not remembering them...they were reasonably forgettable. I just have a good memory forr bad wrestlers.

OK, the answers are:

1. The Flying Nuns-- The Headbangers first WWF name for a very short period, managed by Brother Love
2. The Red Rooster-- You got it, Terry Taylor
3. Xanta Klaus-- Balls Mahoney played the Evil Santa, managed by Ted DiBiase (it was to show that EVERYONE HAD A PRICE FOR THE MILLION DOLLAR MAN!

Ok, I now remember these......Didnt realize that Dusyy's name was known as the Common Man...I thought he went by Dusty Rhodes and the common man was just his gimmick....

He was actually called, the Common Man Dusty Rhodes, but that would've given the answer away.

Looking at those guys and seeing the success they've had elsewhere, you get the feeling that Vince isn't a genious like everyone says, a good business man but no genious...

Ok, new subject: Favorite matches of alltime...No limit...

I forgot most of the Jerry Lynn/RVD matches, they were all pretty cool...what a shame JL didn't make it in the WWF(E), given the chance he could have been a main eventer.

Ahh yes, those 2 had epic battles.....It looked like lynn may get a push as he won the lightheavyweight belt like in his 1st or 2nd match (I know it was very early) but then just seemed to fade away....

He is a very good performer....

Well that could work both ways as he came up with some of the biggest names ever like Hogan and Austin....
Austin was good in WCW but not the way he is followed now....
Dusty was already old when he went to the WWF....
Some great decisions, some not....lol
:D

Goldberg was on Raw, I dare say he'll put the Rock out of wrestling...I say this because last I heard Rocky was planning on retiring and going Hollywood full time.
