Nagy Among Padres' Cuts
PEORIA, Ariz. -- Charles Nagy accepted assignment to Triple-A Portland as the San Diego Padres cut five players.
In camp as a non-roster invitee, Nagy's attempt to earn the final spot in the rotation ended when he was struck by a line drive last Wednesday. He bruised his right forearm and has not thrown since.
The 35-year-old right-hander was 1-0 with a 3.97 ERA in three spring appearances, including one start.
With Nagy headed to Portland, rookies Mike Bynum and Clay Condrey are the candidates for the fifth spot in the Padres' rotation.
Nagy who lives in the San Diego suburb of Rancho Santa Fe, was 129-103 with a 4.51 ERA in 13 seasons with the Cleveland Indians. He signed with the Padres on Dec. 20 and would get a $500,000, one-year contract if he is added to the major league roster.
Last season, Nagy was 1-4 with an 8.88 ERA in 19 appearances, including seven starts.
