Hamilton Leaves Devil Rays

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Tampa Bay minor league prospect Josh Hamilton has left minor league camp for "personal reasons.''

The team declined to release any other information. Officials took a similar stance last season when former Devil Rays infielder Russ Johnson left the club to be treated for anxiety and depression.

Hamilton was the No. 1 overall pick in the 1999 amateur draft, but has yet to play a full season in the minors because of injuries. He was optioned to Double-A Orlando two week ago.

Brewers Ship Valentin to Devil Rays for Conti

PHOENIX -- Outfielder Jason Conti was acquired by the Milwaukee Brewers from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for catcher Javier Valentin.

Conti, 28, hit .257 for Tampa Bay last season with three homers and 21 RBI.

Valentin, 27, hit .286 with 21 home runs and 80 RBI for Triple-A Edmonton last year and was obtained by the Brewers in November from the Minnesota Twins.

"In Jason Conti, we have acquired an outfielder with major league experience that will provide immediate assistance, given the injuries our club has sustained during spring training,'' Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said. "He has great versatility in the outfield and will provide depth to our club as we begin regular-season play.''
