Virginia Ballpark Would Cost Estimated $400 Million
McLEAN, Va. -- A baseball stadium in northern Virginia would cost about $400 million, according to a state legislator, 33 percent higher than initial estimates in the late 1990s.
Despite the higher cost, taxes on tickets, concessions, player salaries and other revenue generated by baseball are likely to fund the state's share of the construction costs, Del. Vincent Callahan, chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, said Tuesday.
The state will need to find only an extra $1 million to $2 million a year, he said, down from a $10 million annual gap initially projected.
Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Portland, Ore., are trying to convince baseball owners to move the Montreal Expos to their area by the 2004. Baseball owners hope to make a decision by the All-Star break in July.
