Devil Rays Sign Shumpert Off Waivers From Dodgers
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Devil Rays signed utilityman Terry Shumpert to a one-year contract and purchased the contract of outfielder Rocco Baldelli from Class-A Bakersfield.
The team also purchased the contracts of left-hander Jim Parque and right-hander Steve Parris from Triple-A Durham.
The Devil Rays reassigned catcher Hector Ortiz to minor league camp and designated outfielder George Lombard, shortstop Hector Luna and left-hander Hans Smith for assignment.
The moves reduced Tampa Bay's roster to the 25-man limit.
The Los Angeles Dodgers released the 36-year-old Shumpert on Friday after he hit .317 with two home runs and nine RBI in 24 games this spring.
He is a .255 lifetime hitter with 47 home runs, 216 RBI and 84 stolen bases in 13 seasons with Kansas City, Boston, the Chicago Cubs, San Diego and Colorado.
