I know that I posted in the Dugout forum about the possibility of the Expos folding, but I found on their web site this item about them naming Bill Robinson as hitting coach for the 2002 season.

MONTREAL -- If any magic still lingers from the "We Are Family" era, the Expos may well see a reversal of fortunes at the plate in 2002.

The team announced Friday that Bill Robinson will be its new hitting coach, replacing Pat Roessler, who was relieved of his duties Oct. 6. The announcement was made by the Expos' interim general manager, Larry Beinfest.

Robinson, 58, spent 16 seasons in the Major Leagues with the Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies and the Pittsburgh Pirates. He batted .258 with 229 doubles, 29 triples, 166 homers and 641 RBI over his career. The former outfielder, who appeared in 1,472 Major League games, played for the 1979 World Champion Pirates alongside Willie Stargell and Dave Parker.

Robinson spent the last three seasons as the hitting coach for the Columbus Clippers in the Yankees' farm system. Prior to joining the Yankees, he spent two seasons as a coach for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in the Phillies' chain. He was also a coach for Double-A Reading (1994-95), and managed them in 1996. Robinson also managed Shreveport of the Giants' organization in 1992, leading them to the Texas League title. In 1990 and 1991, he worked for ESPN as a baseball analyst.

This will be Robinson's second tour of duty as a coach at the Major League level; he served as the hitting and first base coach for the New York Mets from 1984 to 1989. In 1988, the Mets led the National League in runs scored (703), home runs (152) and were second in hitting with a .256 mark. Prior to that season, Robinson managed Caracas to the Venezuelan League Championship and a berth in the Caribbean World Series.

Robinson joins manager Jeff Torborg's staff, which includes bench coach Rick Renick, third base coach Ozzie Guillen, first base/infield coach Perry Hill, pitching coach Brad Arnsberg, bullpen coach Jeff Cox and bullpen coordinator Pierre Arsenault.

Robinson will clearly have work to do. In 2001, Montreal finished 12th in the NL in average (.253), 13th in walks (478), tied for 14th in on-base percentage (.319), 14th in runs scored (670), and last in home runs (131).
