Kevin Nicholson was drawing more attention than Rebecca Romaine at a fraternity party. His slick fielding and .330 average were drawing rave reviews from the Colorado Rockies' brass. Then the trapdoor gave way, and Nicholson was left with a broken wrist and an uncertainty when or if he could bounce back.
The uncertainty continued last Thursday, as the Rockies outrighted Nicholson off the 40-man roster.
"He wasn't having great Arizona Fall League, and we thought that we'd have a good chance of getting him through waivers if we did it right now," said General Manager Dan O'Dowd. "We did, so we retain his rights, and that gives us added depth in the infield."
The move was also important because it reduces the Colorado 40-man to 36, which opens up room for highly touted prospects Colin Young, Cam Esslinger, Rene Reyes and Matt Holliday.
