The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced they have agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher John VanBenschoten, the club's first-round selection (eighth overall) in the 2001 June draft. No other terms of the deal were disclosed. The announcement was made by Mickey White, the Pirates' Director of Scouting.
VanBenschoten, 21, went 2-2 with a 2.77 ERA in 48.2 innings of work as a junior at Kent State University. The 6'4", 200-pounder was ranked by Baseball America as the 7th-best overall player available in the draft. He also hit .443 (93-for-210) with 14 doubles, six triples, 30 home runs, 79 RBI and 22 stolen bases as a first baseman.
VanBenschoten is scheduled to begin his professional career with Williamsport in the New York-Penn League.
The Pirates have now signed 18 of their 49 selections from this year's draft.
