DENVER -- The Rawlings Sporting Goods Company on Tuesday afternoon named a pair of Colorado Rockies to the 2001 National League Gold Glove team. First baseman Todd Helton earned his first career Gold Glove Award, and outfielder Larry Walker his sixth. It is the first time in Colorado history that two players have been named in the same season. Walker is the franchise leader with four Gold Glove Awards (1997-99, 2001), and Helton joins Neifi Perez (2000) as the only other two Rockies to earn the coveted honor.

Helton, 28, led all major league first basemen during the 2001 season with a .999 fielding percentage. The lefthander made just two errors in 1,427 chances and did not commit his first error of the season until June 30th. That error snapped a streak of 98 consecutive errorless games, the most ever by a Rockies infielder.

For Walker the Gold Glove Award is the sixth overall he has earned as he also earned the award while with Montreal in back-to-back seasons, 1992-93. Larry, 34, started the Rockies 2001 season in spectacular fashion on Opening Day when he gunned down the Cardinals’ Vina at the plate in the first inning for his first of eight assists on the season. He now has 122 career outfield assists.
