Rays' Grieve Needs Thumb Surgery

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Tampa Bay Devil Rays outfielder Ben Grieve will undergo exploratory surgery on his left thumb to determine the cause of an infection that required hospitalization last weekend.

Grieve is to be operated on at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list, a move retroactive to April 18.

Devil Rays manager Lou Piniella said Grieve could be out three to six weeks.

Grieve is hitting .244 with two RBI in 15 games. He spent last Friday and Saturday nights at Bayview Hospital in Baltimore to receive antibiotics.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Tampa Bay Devil Rays outfielder Ben Grieve had surgery on his left thumb to determine the cause of an infection that required hospitalization last weekend.

Grieve was operated on at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, a move retroactive to April 18.

Grieve is expected to be out at least a month. The surgery was done on an outpatient basis.

Results of a culture taken should be known Friday. It will help determine what antibiotics Grieve will receive.

Grieve is hitting .244 with two RBI in 15 games. He spent last Friday and Saturday nights at Bayview Hospital in Baltimore to receive antibiotics.

It wasn't that long ago that Grieve was considered the next sure-thing prospect in baseball.
