The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced that Rick Sofield has been named Minor League Field Coordinator. The announcement was made by Dave Littlefield, the Pirates' Senior Vice President and General Manager.
Sofield, 44, managed the Las Vegas 51's (Dodgers' AAA) to a 68-76 record in 2001. He spent the previous two seasons (1999-2000) as Los Angeles' Minor League Field Coordinator, a position he also held with the Montreal Expos organization in 1998.
A former number one pick by the Minnesota Twins in the 1975 June draft, Sofield spent three years as an outfielder in the Majors with the Twins (1979-1981) and compiled a .243 average, nine home runs and 66 RBIs in 207 games. He also played 10 years in the minors with the Twins and the Texas Rangers' organizations.
Following his playing days, Sofield served as head coach for seven years at the University of Utah, winning the Regional Coach-of-the-Year award in 1993. He also managed in the Expos' farm system from 1995-97, guiding Harrisburg (AA) to the Eastern League championship in 1997.
Sofield replaces Steve Demeter, who served the Pirates as their Minor League Field Coordinator in 1984 and 1986 and in each of the past five years.
