All-Star balloting program begins

In-stadium balloting for the 74th All-Star Game at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago will begin on Friday, April 25, with a special on-field ceremony prior to the White Sox-Twins game, Major League Baseball announced.

RadioShack Corporation, the Official Electronics Retailer of Major League Baseball, will sponsor in-stadium balloting, which is the first phase of MLB's balloting program. All RadioShack in-stadium ballots will include a money-saving coupon redeemable at RadioShack's 7,200 stores (excluding Canada) as well as a sweepstakes offer for a portable DVD player/viewer and 1,000 MLB Prize Packs.

The ballots will also contain details on how to enter RadioShack's Xtreme Baseball Fan Contest, which is entering its second year. This unique fan promotion by RadioShack, in conjunction with former Major Leaguers Cal and Bill Ripken, is designed to find and recognize the country's most passionate baseball enthusiasts.

For the first time, RadioShack In-Stadium Balloting will be conducted outside the 50 United States and Canada as fans attending the Montreal Expos games in San Juan, Puerto Rico, from June 3-8 will have the opportunity to vote at Hiram Bithorn Stadium. RadioShack In-Stadium Balloting will start at each of the remaining ballparks no later than Tuesday, May 13. A schedule of launch dates for RadioShack In-Stadium Balloting at each of the Major League ballparks is attached.

"Major League Baseball All-Star Game Balloting is an activity that has been enjoyed by generations of baseball fans," said Tim Brosnan, Executive Vice President, Business for Major League Baseball. "Thanks to RadioShack, the 30 Major League Baseball Clubs and numerous other MLB business partners, the 2003 All-Star Game Balloting program has the potential to extend this wonderful tradition to more fans than ever before and generate great anticipation for the 2003 All-Star Game at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago."

"We're excited to be sponsoring in-stadium All-Star balloting for the first time and broadening our promotional reach with Major League Baseball," said Jim McDonald, senior vice president of marketing and advertising for RadioShack. "We expect to see a lot more baseball fans in our stores this summer as a result of our ballot sponsorship and promotional offers. Major League ballparks are also the perfect environment in which to promote our MLB sweepstakes and our XtremeSM Baseball Fan contest. Combine this with our annual sponsorship of All-Star Sunday and it makes a great double play combination."

Online balloting via MLB.com, the Official Website of Major League Baseball, and retail balloting, sponsored by Pepsi, will begin on Thursday, May 1, and Monday, May 19, respectively. There will be official ceremonies to launch the online and retail balloting programs. Further details regarding those events will be provided at a later date.

For the third consecutive year, Major League Baseball will distribute nearly 10 million ballots in several foreign countries and Puerto Rico. Details about this extensive program will be released at a later date.

The Major League Baseball All-Star Balloting Program is the largest balloting program in professional sports. The fan balloting program will determine the eight position players in each league, and the designated hitter in the American League, who will start the All-Star Game.

Fan balloting updates will be announced beginning with the American League on Tuesday, May 27. A complete All-Star Game fan balloting announcement schedule is attached.

The 74th All-Star Game will be televised nationally by FOX Sports and televised around the world by Major League Baseball International, with pre-game ceremonies beginning at 8:00 p.m. EDT. ESPN Radio will provide exclusive, national radio coverage, while MLB.com will provide extensive online coverage and MLB Radio will provide exclusive play-by-play coverage of the game on the Internet.
