HOUSTON -- Gerry Hunsicker's contract as general manager of the Houston Astros was extended Wednesday through the 2004 season.
Hunsicker helped the Astros win four division titles in six years as general manager and made several key trades that have kept the Astros in contention.
"Gerry Hunsicker has been an integral part of our management team," owner Drayton McLane said. "He has played a key role in our past success and we look forward to his continued leadership in the future.
The Astros missed the playoffs in 2000 but return this year after Hunsicker acquired catcher Brad Ausmus, a Gold Glove winner, and signed free agent third baseman Vinny Castilla.
Hunsicker also obtained pitchers Pedro Astacio, Ron Villone and Mike Williams, who helped the Astros go 21-7 in August.
"The best is yet to come for the Houston Astros," Hunsicker said.
Hunsicker participated in the committee that recently selected Jimy Williams as the team's 13th manager, replacing Larry Dierker, who was forced to resign after the season.
